Motorhome Camping in Zagora: Where to Park a Campervan in the Desert

Yes, you can bring a motorhome to Zagora. The main road from Ouarzazate is fully paved, the town is used to campervans, and there are simple places to spend the night among the palm groves. The desert beyond it, however, is a different matter.

Is Zagora driveable with a motorhome?

The paved N9 from Ouarzazate brings you all the way into Zagora over a smooth, well-maintained road. From the town, a sealed road continues roughly ninety kilometres to M’Hamid, but the last stretch toward the Erg Chigaga dunes is sandy track — best left to a 4×4 or a guided tour.

Where to park a motorhome in Zagora

  • A dedicated camper stop or campsite with space for vans, water, electricity and a sanitary point.
  • A garden guesthouse that allows campervans to stay the night on the property.
  • A simple wild spot at the edge of the palm groves — always ask locally first.

Facilities and what to expect

Dedicated campsites near Zagora offer hook-up and a place to empty water tanks. More basic stays are simply a flat, shaded parking spot — comfortable for one quiet night, but without services. Water is easy to find; electricity less so, so arrive with a full tank if you depend on hook-ups.

Taking a campervan into the dunes: a warning

No motorhome belongs on the soft sand of Erg Chebbi or Erg Chigaga — you will sink. Leave the van parked and join a 4×4 or camel tour for the dunes. Guides run trips from Zagora out to the great dunes and back in a day, or overnight at a desert camp. See our Sahara camping guide for what those adventures involve.

Getting here from Marrakech

The drive from Marrakech to Zagora takes about six hours, all on paved roads with regular fuel and supply stops, the last and best at Ouarzazate. Routing through the Draa Valley makes it one of the most scenic motorhome routes in Morocco.

Best time to visit by motorhome

October to April is the most comfortable window for van life in the desert. Summer days are intense, and without hook-up your fridge and fans work harder — carry water and charge up before the hot months.

Where to stay: Taragalte Park

For a comfortable base near your overnight parking, Taragalte Park is a family-run garden retreat just outside Zagora. Its rooms are perfect if you fancy a proper night off the road, and the team can arrange the dune tours your campervan can’t reach.
