The Draa Valley, Morocco: A Slow Road Through Palms and Kasbahs

The Draa Valley is Morocco’s longest river valley — a green ribbon of date palms and earthen kasbahs that threads from the High Atlas down to the very edge of the Sahara. For most travellers it is the slow, scenic road from Marrakech to the desert, and the landscape that surrounds Taragalte Park.
Where is the Draa Valley?
The Draa runs roughly two hundred kilometres south from Ouarzazate, past the oasis towns of Agdz and Tinzouline, through Zagora, and on to M’Hamid at its southern end. Along the way the river feeds a chain of palm oases that have been farmed for centuries.

Why the Draa Valley is special
Few places in Morocco compress so much into one valley: fortress-like kasbahs, walled ksour, endless palm plantations and a river that finally disappears into the desert. It is quieter than the Atlas towns and feels older — a living watercourse the Sahara has never quite swallowed.
The Draa Valley route: what to see
Heading south from Ouarzazate, the palmeraie of Agdz opens the valley proper, followed by a string of kasbahs standing like landmarks above the palms. Zagora marks the halfway point and the last main town; beyond it the road narrows toward M’Hamid and the open sands.

What to do in the Draa Valley
- Walk through the palm groves along the irrigation channels.
- Visit one of the old kasbahs or ksour above the river.
- Ride a camel at sunset out of Zagora toward the edge of the dunes.
- Drink mint tea with the farming families of the oases.
- Sleep out under the stars — the valley’s night sky is famous.
Best time to visit the Draa Valley
October to April is the sweet spot, with warm days and cool nights. March and April are especially lovely, when the palms are at their most vivid green before the summer heat.
Where to stay: Taragalte Park
Taragalte Park sits at the edge of a palm grove in the Draa Valley, just outside Zagora — a calm base for exploring the valley by day and sleeping under its famous sky by night. Its rooms and garden keep the oasis comfortable.

Frequently asked questions
How long should you spend in the Draa Valley?
Most travellers allow one to two nights between Marrakech and the desert. Overnighting near Zagora lets you see the kasbahs, the palms and a desert sunset without rushing.
Is the Draa Valley worth visiting?
If you are heading to the Sahara anyway, the valley is the journey — the kasbahs and oases of the Draa make one of Morocco’s most photogenic drives, and a far quieter alternative to the more touristed Atlas routes.
