M’Hamid Desert Camps: Where to Sleep at the Edge of the Sahara

M’Hamid, usually written M’hamid or Mhamid, is the last real village before the empty Sahara — a huddle of palm groves and earth-brick houses at the southern edge of Morocco. It is the classic gateway to the Erg Chigaga dunes and the base for some of the country’s most remote desert camps.

What is M’Hamid?

Officially M’Hamid El Ghizlane, the village sits around ninety minutes south of Zagora, at the end of the paved road that leaves the Draa Valley behind. Beyond its last palm trees the desert runs uninterrupted to the Algerian border — which is exactly why desert camps gather here.

What to expect from a M’Hamid desert camp

Camps in this region tend to be simple and genuine: camel-hair tents or low canvas, carpets laid on the sand, an evening fire and dinner cooked over coals. Most are reached by car, camel or on foot, and sit among the first dunes of Erg Chigaga, far from any light.

Wild camping vs a proper desert camp

You can lay a mattress on the open sand, but for most travellers a camp handles the logistics — the stove, the water, the guide, the fire. The trade-off between a basic tent and a more comfortable retreat is worth thinking through before you book.

Why choose M’Hamid over Merzouga

Merzouga’s Erg Chebbi is far more famous and far busier. M’Hamid’s Erg Chigaga offers the same towering dunes — some of the highest in Morocco — with far fewer travellers, closer to Marrakech, and an atmosphere that feels closer to the classic Sahara. How to get to M’Hamid

Most visitors drive the scenic route from Marrakech through Ouarzazate and Zagora, about eight hours in total. From Zagora the final leg to M’Hamid takes roughly an hour and a half. A private transfer or a multi-day desert tour covers the whole journey door to door.

When to visit M’Hamid

October to April is the most comfortable window, with warm days and crisp nights. Spring and autumn bring the clearest skies; summer is ferociously hot, but the nights stay cool enough for camping.

Where to stay: Taragalte Park

A short drive back from the dunes toward Zagora, Taragalte Park is the comfortable base many travellers use to explore Erg Chigaga and M’Hamid. Its rooms and garden sit at the edge of a palm grove, and the team can arrange guides and transfers out to the great dunes.

Frequently asked questions

Is M’Hamid the same as Erg Chigaga?

Not exactly. M’Hamid is the village and the end of the road; Erg Chigaga is the great dune sea about an hour beyond it. Camps described as M’Hamid desert camps are usually set in or near those dunes.

How far is M’Hamid from Zagora?

Around ninety minutes by road, roughly ninety-five kilometres south. Many visitors base themselves at a camp near Zagora and drive out to M’Hamid and the dunes for the day.
